2 parts Gin
½ part Blue Curacao
5 Ice cubes
1 Blue cocktail cherry
The Sapphire Martini derives its blue colour by the addition of Blue Curacao. It’s typically served in a frozen martini glass, and made with frozen gin.
“Forbes” magazine found the Sapphire Martini to be the most expensive cocktail in America. When conducting a search for the most expensive cocktails in the world, “Forbes” came across the Mezz lounge at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut. At Mezz, the Sapphire Martini is made with Bombay Sapphire gin, blue Curacao and a dash of dry vermouth. It’s served in a blue sugar-rimmed glass and garnished with a sterling-silver pick that holds a pair of platinum-mounted diamond and sapphire earrings. The cost of the drink is $3,000.
Mezz is not the only cocktail lounge to feature expensive jewellery with the Sapphire Martini. On Valentine’s Day 2006, NineThirty Restaurant in the W hotel in Los Angeles featured a promotion in which one lucky winner received a white-gold pendent set with a one-carat solitaire white diamond bezel, worth $10,000. The contest was open to diners who ordered one of NineThirty’s Diamond Sapphire Martinis.
With its jewelled name and look, the Sapphire Martini appears to be a jewel of a cocktail, and tends to be served as such at popular restaurants.
To make a Sapphire Martini, mix the gin and blue Curacao in a cocktail shaker with the ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass and add the cherry.
