1.5 oz gin
¾ oz applejack
¼ oz lemon juice
1-2 dashes grenadine
1 egg white
Maraschino cherry for garnish
The Pink Lady is known to be one of the first “girly” cocktails created, and was widely enjoyed by society ladies in the 1930s. The grenadine gives this drink a light pink colour, almost like a blush, which is where it derives its name. The egg white creates foam on top of the pink drink, adding to the “ladylike,” intimate look of the drink.
Despite all of the “girly” tendencies this drink seems to have, the gin and applejack make it a far cry from being a light cocktail, a perfect cocktail for a lady. Quite the contrary, these two ingredients give the Pink Lady quite a bite. This is one cocktail that is truly underestimated.
The Pink Lady is still enjoyed by high society women. “Food and Wine” magazine features the cocktail on their website, using the recipe from the Teardrop Cocktail Lounge in Portland Oregon, which adheres to the classic recipe, and uses homemade grenadine.
