Aside from the spirits used when mixing cocktails, many drinks have additional ingredients, such as fruit juices. Some of the most commonly used juices include cranberry juice, coconut milk, lime juice, tomato juice and pineapple juice. These juices are added to the liquor in the drink to produce a unique taste.
Fruit juices are the most commonly used. Pineapple juice, for example, is used in a Pina Colada, Bahama Mama, Blue Hawaiian and Cruiser. There are more than 900 mixed drinks that call for pineapple juice. Lime juice is found in more than 650 recipes, including a Cape Cod Cooler, Island Toy, Margarita Martini and Vodka Gimlet. Cranberry juice is also found in more than 650 mixed drinks. Among these are the Absolut Passion, Cabo Wabo and Cosmopolitan. These three fruit juices are the most popular, but other juices are also used in recipes, such as grapefruit and orange juice.
In addition to the popular fruit juices, coconut milk and tomato juice are often used. Tomato juice is an ingredient in more than 40 recipes, including a Bloody Mary, Red Eye and Tomboy. Coconut milk is much sweeter than the fruit juices and is found in almost 20 recipes, including a Beachcomber, Pina Colada and Unforgettable Night.
Fruit juices are important ingredients in hundreds of mixed drinks. Some drinks will contain a mixture of more than one fruit juice, such as the Mai Tai, while other drinks, like a Cape Codder, only contains one type of juice.
