Making the perfect cocktail does not only involve the taste of the drink, it also includes the presentation. Garnishes are a great way to add visual appeal to any cocktail, and many of the edible garnishes used actually add a touch of additional flavour to the drink. Many times, the garnish that is used can give a little hint as to what the drink will taste like. For example, a cocktail garnished with lemon or lime wedges will indicate the drink is sour.
There are various garnishes to use when finishing off the cocktail. Some of the more common edible garnishes include a Maraschino cherry, stuffed olives, fruit wedges, celery sticks and coffee beans. Some drinks have specific garnishes that need to be added, such as a Bloody Mary, which is almost always served with a celery stick.
Maraschino cherries are often seen in a Sweet Martini. A Dry Martini is served with a stuffed olive, which is basically an olive on a cocktail stick.
While some drinks require an edible garnish, others are just made more exciting by the addition. It is common for fruit wedges to be used on the rim of a glass. Another popular fruit garnish is called a sail. This consists of a whole slice of a citrus fruit. The slice is placed on a cocktail stick, with the stick running through opposite points of the fruit. A cherry is typically placed in the centre.
Edible garnishes are a great way to spruce up any cocktail. There are endless possibilities, allowing the maker of the drink to add a little creative touch to the cocktail when it is served.
